Dr. Seysan recommends an annual women's health exam each year for women of all ages.

Pain or Other Symptoms

Whether you are sexually active or not, you should get a gynecological exam if you have any of these symptoms:

• pain in the lower belly or pelvic area
• pain or discomfort in the vaginal area
• vaginal discharge that itches, burns or has bad odor
• vaginal bleeding that lasts more than 10 days
• missed periods
• very bad cramps that cause you to miss school or work

The Well-Woman Exam

A well-woman exam is an annual preventive screening of breast and gynecological diseases. You don't have to see a gynecologist for a well-woman visit. You can see your primary care doctor. Be sure to say you're coming in for a "well-woman visit" when you schedule your appointment.

During your annual well woman exam is a good time to discuss any female issues you are having. Feel free to talk about your stress levels, your nutrition, your mood, your medications, your sex life, your family health history, etc.

The doctor can also answer any questions you may have about sexually transmitted infections, such as Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

A gynecological exam includes a complete pelvic exam and Pap smear. The Pap test can find early changes of the cervix before they become cancer. Early detection saves lives.

A woman should have her first pelvic exam when becoming sexually active. This is also a good time to discuss birth control methods, if you do not intend to become pregnant. If you're not sure what type of birth control is right for you, please discuss this with the doctor. We also provide pregnancy testing at our office.

Pelvic Exam & Breast Exam

The pelvic exam is not painful, and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Also Dr. Seysan does a physical breast exam. Every woman should do breast exams at home each month. We recommend checking your breasts for any abnormalities or changes. If you find something irregular, please don't wait to see the doctor. Again, early detection saves lives.

Menopause

Many women have issues with menopause. If you are having unpleasant menopause related symptoms, or if you just want to know what to expect as you go through this life change, please make an appointment to talk with Dr. Seysan.
